GIF from CNN Philippines. News Anchor Pinky Webb while interviewing Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

“A free press is courageous and will pursue those stories that are important to its readers and viewers, without fear or favor.” (Bureau of International Information Programs United States Department of State, 2013).

In at least 300 words, my Broadcasting Principles and Practices class require us to write a blog about a news personality we favor and elaborate our reasons for looking up to them. But what if I was never in favor of anyone? What if I was always in favor of listening to the news they deliver?

I do not think I was ever easily impressed by just any individual news personality. My general astonishment often blinded me at the whole idea of people writing about seeking the truth, challenging assumptions, and authority. But if I’m required to talk about someone who has ever landed in my favor, I will gladly do so. Recently, Broadcaster Pinky Webb interviewed the Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque. The Broadcaster read UP Professor Danny Arao’s tweet to ask for the Presidential Spokesperson’s reaction. After the commercial break, Harry Roque wanted to clarify his answer. He seemed pressed in delivering his message, saying that “You (Pinky Webb) made it appear that it is compulsory for me to follow him.”

Having experienced conducting an interview, I do not think I was ever that effective. I stuttered and had difficulty handling the conversation. In my opinion, Broadcaster Pinky Webb is a news personality that people can look up to, that I can look up to. She was well-prepared, handled the conversation well so that assumptions can be challenged, stances could be clarified, and information can be disseminated. I admire her courage and skills.
